The cement manufacturing giant faced lack of visibility into operations that affected optimum utilisation of capacity, resulting in higher costs and misdirection. They have manufacturing plants at distant locations and transport large amounts of material inputs that are stored at optimum temperatures. They needed efficiency in managing and incentivising dealers and must maintain momentum in the chain of operations.
Besides operational requirements, they required a proper data repository, automated data extraction and reporting which can speed up time taken for analytics, and lead to faster decision making.
03.AWS Data Lake for Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd.
Most of Dalmia Cement’s data was in silos, and the Data Lake solution first enabled data ingestion from multiple sources such as their analytics application, human capital management system, logistics management system, market mapping portal, mobility database, flat files and Excel into a single reservoir. AWS S3, Glue and Redshift were then used to facilitate data processing, analysis and visualisation.
The Data Lake framework enables data consolidation of hundreds of tables in the central repository and ingestion. Data is then cleaned and stored for business users to readily access and read via QlikView visualisation tool using AWS Redshift. The Data ingestion and transformation framework is a fully automated system from all data sources in the company based on PySpark for batch ingestion including RDBMS and AWS S3.
